You Can’t Stop, Even If You Want To

If you get over the hurdle of getting involved in social media, and for small business it is a huge hurdle, then you face the next big problem… not quitting. And that may not be very different than alot of things in life, right?

Think about when you first got into Facebook. It was pretty sweet, wasn’t it? You were like on there every day for hours. When you couldn’t sleep you got up in the middle of the night and got on Facebook, right? You were so excited about the whole thing and you were motivated. And you know, many times it is the same for the business owner.

They get involved in Facebook, or Twitter, or Foursquare, or Youtube, and they get excited. They figure it out and see some success, and they get pumped. They pour their energy into it and then something happens… life.

They get busy with running the business. They get tired. And they start spending less and less time on Facebook… on Twitter… on Youtube. They quit checking everything on a daily basis and they only look every other day. The newness wears off, and they aren’t so excited about it. And that’s a problem.

If you stopped doing payroll for your employees because you just got tired of doing it, what would happen? If you decided to quit paying your bills because you are just tired of doing it, what would your creditors say? Yeah, it would be a problem. It’s the same with social media. Social media is having a conversation with your customers and you wouldn’t ignore your customers, would you? Well, you wouldn’t do it on purpose, I’m sure. But that is what you are doing if you begin to ignore your social media channels.

Once you start using social media, you can’t stop. It’s that simple. So don’t even think about starting unless you can dedicate time and energy to it. Because starting it and then letting it languish is worse than not starting it at all.
