The statistics speak volumes… half of small businesses don’t even have a website<\/a>, much less have stepped into the social media waters.\u00a0 And I have blogged previously<\/a> about why small businesses don’t get into social media.\u00a0 But I wanted to write today about the fact that the mountain isn’t as high as you would think.<\/p>\n

The other day I was presenting to a group of small business owners about social media and after I got done talking to them about all these wonderful social media tools available to engage customers, I had several of them lament that they don’t have time to monitor all these social media outlets and keep track of everything.\u00a0 Then I told them about all the tools available to help you with that, like Hootsuite<\/a>, SocialMention<\/a>, and many others.\u00a0 Eyes around the room lit up.\u00a0 They had never heard of this before.<\/p>\n

After the session was over a lady came up to me and said to me, in essence, ‘Are you sure there isn’t more involved in setting up that Twitter <\/a>account and Facebook <\/a>page?\u00a0 Seems pretty easy to me.’\u00a0 And she is right… she just never realized it.\u00a0 She viewed it as a mountain.\u00a0 It isn’t rocket science here, and it isn’t that hard to do these things.\u00a0 The hardest part, in my opinion, is finding the time to do it.\u00a0 And let’s face it, time is a very precious commodity indeed.\u00a0 But so many people are intimidated by the world of social media and view it really as a mountain that they just aren’t up to climbing.<\/p>\n

But it isn’t a mountain.\u00a0 I understand that in their mind, it is.\u00a0 But by exhibiting a little courage and just jumping in, they will discover that the mountain isn’t that big. And as long as they don’t try to implement every social media tool out there at the same time, it is possible to be successful.<\/p>\n

In fact, they’ll find out that the mountain really does look like a molehill.\u00a0 And success is there for the taking.<\/p>\n
