Secret Sauce: How To Get More Likes, Comments, & Shares

Facebook recently updated their “Facebook Insights” for Pages, which is a tool that gives you some ‘insight’ into who your fans are, what they are responding too, and how far your posts are reaching. They also rolled out a great tutorial on how to interpret your Facebook Insights, and you can find that here: http://www.learnpageinsights.com/

It takes about 20 minutes to go through the tutorial and it is a fantastic overview of how to use Insights, so I strongly encourage you to go through it. You’ll thank me. But I wanted to talk about something from the tutorial that I learned about how to get more likes, comments, and shares, which is really one of the main goals of having a Facebook Page. It was even more reassuring to me to find out that some of the advice that I have been giving about how to do this very thing was right on target. Here is a summary of the most important bits:

Posts between 100-200 characters receive 60% more likes, comments, and shares than posts greater than 250 characters. So don’t feel compelled to type up long posts. Shorter is better.
Photo albums, pictures, and videos receive 180%, 120%, and 100% (respectively) increased engagement over other posts. You tend to focus on the pictures and videos when you surf Facebook, right? Yeah, we all do.
Post regularly to keep you ‘top of mind’ with your followers. This is arguably the hardest thing to do… posting regularly. I struggle with this myself. Everyone gets busy, but if you want to be forefront in people’s minds, you gotta do it. Every day.
Ask questions. If you ask a question then people are more likely to respond to you. Sounds almost too easy, doesn’t it?
Post ‘fill in the blank’ questions. These get 90% more engagement over other posts. This is also one of those ‘no-brainer’ things. They won’t be able to resist… everyone loves to fill in the blank.
Give them access to exclusive information. Give your fans early access to sales… exclusive photos from events… stuff they can only get on your page. Make it exclusive and people want it.
Reward fans with deals and perks. You probably already do this on some level. Every loves a deal. Use your Facebook Page to give them a deal.
Be timely. Talk about things that are already top of mind with your fans… current events, holidays, news, etc.
Localize posts if they are only relevant to a certain area or group of people. You can target your posts to just certain areas or groups of people. Do this to make your posts relevant.

So there you have it. This is advice straight from Facebook. They keep the stats, and they know what works. So take their advice. Then come back here and thank me. After you ‘like’ my page, of course. http://www.facebook.com/steveholtconsulting
