“When you show interest in others, others will show interest in you.”
My friend Michael Angelo Caruso says that alot. And in addition to having a cool name, Michael is right! When you think about it, it sounds alot like the golden rule… ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’
I consult alot of businesses on using social media to promote their business, and it astounds me how many businesses don’t get that simple truth. In fact, I have spoken to some smart, successful, and engaged business owners who follow the golden rule in their personal lives, but for some reason it never translates over to their business.
You see, when it comes to social media and business, taking Michael’s words to heart can transform your business. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen businesses start a Facebook page or Twitter account and all they do is post updates about their latest product, or how you can get 25% off your next purchase if you act now! They spend all their time talking about themselves and then wonder why no one seems to be paying attention. They don’t spend any time talking about their customers, or bragging on their customers, or seeking their customer’s input.
I tell everyone that ‘people want to do business with people, not business’. So take Michael’s advice and spend more time showing interest in others, and I promise you that others will most assuredly show interest in you. And that’s how the ‘golden rule’ will not only change your life, but your business as well.

Thanks for the shout out, Steve. Great post! I advise business people to use the 80/20 rule when posting to Facebook, Linkedin, et al. 80% of your posts should be social and only 20% business.
That’s why they call it SOCIAL media. I really enjoyed your e-book on Google tips.
