The Internet Is Down… So Now What Am I Gonna Do?

I am lucky enough to work for an employer that basically shuts down for 7-10 days over the Christmas/New Years holiday. So that gives me plenty of time at home during that time to get caught up on all the things that I need to get caught up on like reading, blog posts, writing new books, and researching new speaking topics.

Yeah, right.

What it ends up being is a time where I sleep late, let email pile up in my inbox, ignore my blog and Facebook pages, eat too much food, and generally be a lazy bum. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. (Thank you Jerry Seinfeld) And to make things worse, a few days ago the internet went down at my house, and we had to schedule a repair tech to come to the house and find out what is going on. That only added to my anxiety. You see, even though I wasn’t using the internet connection to do any actual productive work, I was now thinking in my head that I was getting behind in the things that I was supposed to be doing.

Weird, I know.

What I should really take away from all this is that we all feel like this at times. I have written about the problems that technology overload can cause, and I have also written about why small businesses have such a hard time being successful with social media. The truth of the matter is that no matter how fast and efficient you are, no matter what a hard-working person you are, nobody can maintain that high level of productivity all the time. And you shouldn’t expect it.

The internet connection does go down sometimes. Sometimes you do need to sleep late. And yes, sometimes those emails can wait. The important thing to remember is that you need to get back up on the horse. Don’t quit just because you feel overwhelmed and you don’t feel like you don’t have the time or the
energy to do what you need to do. Maybe you can’t do it all, but you need to do at least what you can do.

The internet will come back up, I promise. Now, where is that leftover cake??
